Volkswagen executive due in federal court over emissions scandal

A Volkswagen executive at the center of the automaker's emissions scandal is due in federal court today.

Oliver Schmidt is the former executive with Volkswagen who is accused of playing a key role in deceiving regulators and cheating on emissions tests.

Schmidt, a German national has been in federal custody since his arrest in Florida early last month. He's one of six high level Volkswagen employees indicted by a grand jury in the company's diesel emissions cheating scandal.

Volkswagen has admitted wrongdoing and has agreed to pay a record $4.3 billion penalty.

At one time Schmidt served as the automaker's top emissions compliance manager for the United States.

He's set to be arraigned today on the conspiracy charges.

So far, there is no word on the other 5 employees indicted in connection with the emissions scandal.
