(WXYZ) -- Central Michigan athletic director Dave Heeke is leaving to take the same job at Arizona.

Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press was first to report the move, and WXYZ later confirmed the report through a source with knowledge of the situation.

Arizona made an official announcement Saturday afternoon, stating Heeke will take over as Vice President of Athletics pending contract approval by the university's Board of Regents.

Heeke took over as CMU's athletic director in 2006 following the retirement of Herb Deromedi. Prior to CMU, the East Lansing native spent 18 years at the University of Oregon.

During Heeke's tenure in Mount Pleasant, he oversaw renovations to Kelly/Shorts Stadium and McGuirk Arena, as well as several other athletics expansion and renovation projects.

His football coaching hires included Butch Jones, Dan Enos and John Bonamego, who helped lead the Chippewas to seven combined bowl games in ten seasons.

Heeke's other coaching hires included women's basketball head coach Sue Guevara, who broke the program's all-time wins record on February 15.

In a release, CMU president George Ross said he plans to name an interim athletic director before or soon after April 1.
