Oakland Hills has played host to golf's greatest champions for nearly 100 years.

This week, over 300 men and boys are trying to join that elite club.

The US Amateur began Monday, and will continue through Sunday. It's going to be a grueling test, as the field goes from 312 players to 64 by Wednesday morning.

"It's called The Monster for a reason," first and second round leader Dawson Armstrong said.

Oakland Hills hosted the US Amateur in 2002. That tournament began a busy stretch of high-profile events at the club. The Ryder Cup came next in 2004, with the PGA Championship following in 2008.

Eight years later, the only time the state of Michigan hosted the PGA Tournament's golfers was the 2009 Buick Open.

"This is literally future professional golfers that you're going to get a chance to walk the fairways with, and you won't have another chance in Michigan for quite some time to experience that," US Amateur chairman Lee Juett said.

With the USGA setting its lineup of US Open sites for nearly the next decade, Oakland Hills is taking pride in offering a first-class golf event for fans in Michigan.

"We're used to doing championships, and the community is used to coming to championships at Oakland Hills. So we're pleased with what's going on," Juett added.
