PONTIAC (WXYZ) — Connie Smith still isn't able to talk to doctors and loved ones, but there are times when she is able to nod as she lays in her hospital bed at Detroit Receiving Hospital where she is expected to remain for some time as she recovers from burns to much of her body.

The 53-year-old Pontiac woman is known as Miss Connie at a number of schools where, as a part-time building helper, she is praised for going above and beyond to help the students.

Connie was hospitalized several weeks ago after her boyfriend allegedly threw liquor on her and set her on fire during an argument.

"My whole family is devastated," said Tara Chaney, a teacher at Whitman Elementary where Connie has organized the mobile dentist and other events for the students.

"We just have to keep praying," said Dr. Letha Powell, principal at Whitman.

Connie's brother, Edward Galloway, started a GoFundMe campaign to help Connie as she continues to recover. You can donate to the campaign here.
