Lunafest film festival for women

Lunafest, the traveling film festival is coming to Warren Saturday April 16th. The women's shelter "Turning Point" of Macomb County, organized the event.  It includes 6 films dedicated to empowering women. Click the video player to see JoAnne Purtan's interview on 7 Action News at Noon.

The festival will take place Saturday April 16th at Renaissance Unity Church in Warren. 11200 E 11 Mile Rd, Warren, MI 48089

LunaFest bills itself as  "a traveling film festival of award-winning short films by, for and about women.  Producers intend to donate all of the net proceeds of the film to charity.

The festival champions women’s issues, not the least of which is domestic violence and sexual abuse."

Turning Point's mission is to focus on education and prevention of these troubline issues.

Organizers say, "the films celebrate the unique, touching and inspirational roles of women in local, national and international communities."

Here's a rundown of the films:

Balsa Wood  - A light-hearted slice of life about two mixed race siblings visiting their extended Filipino family for lunch.  Filmmaker - Dominique Lecchi

Boxeadora - One woman defies Fidel Castro’s ban on female boxing to follow her Olympic dreams of glory and become Cuba’s first female boxer. Filmmaker= Meg Smaker
