Star Wars Episode VIII filming begins

Filming for Star Wars: Episode VIII began filming on Monday, according to the movie's website. According to the company, principal filming started at Pinewood Studios in London.

The film will follow Rey as she continues her journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker as they battle to defeat the First Order.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Episode VIII will continue storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

It will also welcome back cast members Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke.

New cast members for Episode VIII include Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.

Though J.J. Abrams will not be directing Episode VIII, he is still an executive producer on the project.

The film is scheduled to be released on Dec. 15, 2017.
