(WXYZ) — Michigan State police, local police departments and sheriff's offices are stepping up patrols this week through the Labor Day weekend as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Throughout the end of the summer, agencies will be increasing patrols and looking out for motorists under the influence of drugs and alcohol. They will also increase messages about the dangers of driving impaired driving.

The patrols will happen on Michigan roads during the 3-week period through Labor Day on Aug. 14 through Sept. 2.

“Labor Day should be a time for friends and family to enjoy the last days of summer,” said Michael Prince, Office of Highway Safety Planning director. “As always, officers will make zero exceptions for impaired driving. There are no excuses. Driving a vehicle while impaired is dangerous.”

Last year, there were 12 deadly crashes, six of which involved alcohol, during the Labor Day holiday on Michigan roads. The percentage of alcohol-related fatalities was about 11 times higher than in all crashes in the state.
