OAK PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) — Monday afternoon, Detroit Police say the River Rouge man wanted for a string of killings across metro Detroit, shot himself in the head when officers were closing in on him.
Kenyel Brown, 40, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.
Police said Brown had jumped a fence and was in someone's backyard near Pasadena and Ridgedale in Oak Park when he fired the single shot.
About a block away from where Brown shot himself is an adult book store where workers called police Monday afternoon. They reported that Brown had been in their store and they asked him to leave.
Brown had left the bookstore but police from Detroit and Oak Park obtained information that Brown could still be in the area.
A tracking dog was used in the search and police said Brown jumped a number of fences in an effort to get away.
But at Pasadena and Ridgedale, Brown may have figured his run from police was over and he shot himself.
On Monday, police said they believe Brown was also responsible for two carjackings.
Police believe the first person killed in a string of murders was Loren Harrington. The 31-year-old man was shot multiple times at a home on the 500 block of Beechwood on December 7, 2019.
Then, on Jan. 30, across the street from that house, police believe Brown fatally shot Kimberly Green, 52, and Dorian Patterson, 48.
In Highland Park on Feb. 18, police believe Kenyel Brown then killed 49-year-old Garcius Woodyard. The Ypsilanti man died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Two days later, on East Eight Mile on Detroit's east side, police believe Brown killed Amir Thaxton. Police said Thaxton and Brown were acquaintances and the motive behind Thaxton's murder may have been robbery.
Then early Saturday morning on Minnesota near John R, Detroit Police believe Brown shot and killed Eugene Jennings inside a vacant house.
Detroit Police are investigating a number of Brown's friends and family members for possibly aiding him in his run from the law that ended Monday afternoon in the backyard of the house in Oak Park.
