A historical agreement was reached on Friday at the North American International Auto Show.
Seventeen foreign and domestic automakers met in one room with the U.S. Department of Transportation and agreed to begin sharing information to keep drivers safe.
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the agreement Friday moring, calling it a broad range of actions to make driving safer.
"These commitments we made today will help catch safety defects before they explode into massive recalls," Foxx said. "They will help improve the quality of data that automakers and NHTSA analyze to see defects today."
The agreement includes improved communications between automakers and NHTSA, shared best industry practices and engagement with cyber security researchers.
