The United Auto Workers and the Detroit 3 are working to come to terms on a new deal.
UAW contracts with Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler end Monday.
Fiat Chrysler announced Sunday that they were the target company to negotiate with. That deal will set a pattern for negotiations with the other companies.
The targeted company could also be hit with a strike if the negotiations fail.
The negotiations are expected to be contentious, as the Detroit 3 are all healthy and making money.
While UAW President Dennis Williams has said he doesn't want a strike, all three automakers are facing that possibility. When the last contracted were negotiated in 2011, strikes were prohibited at GM and Chrysler under the terms of their government backed bankruptcies.
