Mom's a Genius: Mompreneur's phone case featured on Oprah's Favorite Things

Oprah’s highly-anticipated Favorite Things came out Thursday, and a local mom-owned business made the list for one of its simple products – a cell phone case.

Kelly Burgin, owner of K. Carroll Accessories in Auburn Hills, is getting ready to fill orders that will likely rival the busiest of elves.

“We’re staffed up and ready to go,” Burgin said, whose staff will include moms, husbands and kids.

The cell phone case was noticed by Adam Glassman, editor of O Magazine, during a gift show in New York. A loyal customer showed Glassman her case, and the rest was history.

“(Adam) said “Oh my goodness,” I’ve been looking for that for two years. Two days later, Oprah gave us a call,” Burgin said. “We were just literally jumping up and down like school girls."

THE PRODUCT

The cell phone case features a simple design with slots for your credit cards, cash or ID. It also has a strap so you can carry the case around your shoulder.

"You can literally put this on, put it under your coat," she said. "You don't even know you have it; your hands are free."

The credit card slots are RFID protected to safeguard personal information.

"It also comes with a short strap, so if you want to have it more like a wristlet you've got the option there," Burgin added. "You take both straps off and it's just a cell phone case you throw in your purse."

The cell case costs $24.95

EXCITEMENT CONTINUES

Burgin's small business first gained national attention when her reversible handbags were featured on Good Morning America's Deals and Steals section.

She sold four thousand bags after the GMA appearance, and expects more sales from Oprah Magazine customers.
