New development is coming to the Detroit Zoo Great Lakes Nature Center!

The Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation has pledged $2 million to the Detroit Zoo Society for the development of the Nature Center.

The center will be the largest nature attraction dedicated solely to the Great Lakes and home to fish including lake sturgeon and paddlefish, which are now extinct in the Great Lakes.

There will also be emphasis on conservation efforts and habitats for other endangered species such as native amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, shorebirds and birds of prey.

The facility will be more than 25,000 square feet and construction is expected to begin next year.

Total construction will cost an estimated $15 million. The center will be funded through private and foundation contributions.
