MONROE COUNTY (WXYZ) — A 45-year-old from Gibraltar died Tuesday after rear-ending a Freightliner tractor trailer on southbound I-75 in Monroe Township.

The crash happened around 3 p.m., and just north of Motar Creek Road.

The 45-year-old was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in the right lane of southbound I-75. It's unclear what initiated it, but the driver ran into a 2018 Freightliner tractor trailer from behind, investigators say.

The Freightliner, which was being driven by a 29-year-old Ontario man, was traveling at a low rate of speed.

The 45-year-old driver was pinned inside his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured, and both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Speed doesn't seem to be a factor, and it's unclear at this time if alcohol was a factor, investigators say.

This incident remains under investigation with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
