DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Wayne County prosecutors have charged a juvenile in connection to the homicide of 17-year-old James Newman in Dearborn Heights.

Daylon Jamar Wooten, 16, was charged as adult designated, meaning if he is convicted at his sentence hearing the judge can decide if he will be sentenced as a juvenile, adult or combined juvenile and adult sentence.

His charges include: second degree murder, possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.

On Feb. 26 around 1:30 a.m., Wooten was in the 24700 block of Lehigh in Dearborn Heights with Newman when the two young men got into a dispute.

Police say both men were armed with hand guns, and it is alleged that Wooten fatally shot Newman. Two other men at the scene took Newman to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The case remains under investigation.

Wooten has been placed at the Juvenile Detention Facility.

He is due back in court on March 14 for a preliminary examination.
