(WXYZ) — The Macomb County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a 2-year-old accidentally shot himself in the hand on Monday morning.

According to the office, deputies were called to McLaren Macomb Hospital around 10:30 a.m.

They were told that the handgun had been left out briefly when the 2-year-old got ahold of it and shot himself in the hand.

The father who heard the gunshot immediately brought the child to the hospital, where he is in stable condition.

It happened at a mobile home park in Macomb Township, and several people – including adults and other children – were home at the time. The handgun is registered to the father.

“This appears to be a very unfortunate incident that could have easily been deadly. Possessing a weapon is a great responsibility that comes with many risks, especially when children are involved. Please do not leave weapons anywhere that a child can access it, even if just for a second," Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said.

At the same time, the Clinton Township Police Department took a report of a vehicle's rear window being show out as it traveled on Hall Rd. near where the gun had been fired. The driver reported it at the same time the child was shot.

The man driving the car was uninjured.
