YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — An apartment complex pool party turned deadly following a shooting Friday night in Ypsilanti Township.
On July 26 around 8:05 p.m., Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 8700 block of Spinnaker Way in Ypsilanti Township for multiple reports of shots fired with one person wounded.
Deputies arrived and made contact with one victim, later identified as 22-year-old Ypsilanti Township resident Andre Smith, who sustained a gunshot wound. Despite life saving efforts performed by deputies and medical personnel, Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The fatal shooting happened while there was a gathering at the Ford Lake Apartment Complex near the pool area. Shots were exchanged by several people, deputies say. Smith was the only person known to be struck during the gun battle.
There were numerous witnesses present during the time of the incident who were at the pool and in the immediate area, according to police.
Investigators are requesting assistance from the community to help identify the suspects involved in the shooting.
At this time, deputies do not have a motive for the shooting, and the suspects remain unidentified and at large.
