(WXYZ) — Four cities in Michigan received perfect scores for being LGBTQ-friendly communities from the Human Rights Campaign.
Ann Arbor, Detroit, East Lansing and Ferndale all received perfect scores.
HRC'S Municipal Equality Index judged cities across the country on the ways they can support the LGBTQ community.
Scores were determined by factors like non-discrimination laws, protections for LGBTQ employees, municipal services, law enforcement and leadership on LGBTQ equality.
Ann Arbor received "bonus scores" for city employee domestic partner benefits, city-provided services to LGBTQ youth, and city-provided services for the HIV/AIDS population. Detroit received bonus scores for city employee domestic partner benefits, youth bullying prevention policies, services for LGBTQ youth, homeless and HIV-AIDS population, and openly LGBTQ elected or appointed municipal leaders.
Ferndale received bonus points for services for LGBTQ youth, homeless, elders and the transgender community. It also received points for having openly elected or appointed municipal. East Lansing got bonus points for city employee domestic partner benefits, protecting youth from conversion therapy, openly LGBTQ elected or appointed municipal leaders and testing limits of a restrictive state law.
