SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) — Two students were tased and a total of six students were detained after a large physical altercation broke out at Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology Wednesday afternoon, police said.
School resource officers and security responded to the altercation in the cafeteria around 1:15 p.m., according to the Southfield Police Department.
One student suffered a minor hand injury.
To gain control of the situation, police said two students were tased. A total of six students were taken into police custody and are set to be released to parents and guardians.
The case was taken to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for a decision on charges. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
Southfield Public Schools says it's working with police to find what led up to the incident. The district is also working to prevent incidents from escalating like this in the future.
"The district would like to thank our security officers, the Southfield Police Department, and building-level administration for their swift and immediate action. Providing a safe and secure learning environment is of top priority for our school system," the district said in a statement. "Southfield Public Schools will continue to inform our families of incidents that may affect the safety and well-being of our students and staff."
Superintendent Jennifer Green, Ph.D., said students involved "will face disciplinary actions."
“We take these incidents very seriously,” Green said in a statement. “According to Board of Education policy students involved in physical altercations will face disciplinary actions.”
