ELBA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office said a 7-year-old drowned while trying to catch frogs at a residential pond during a family reunion on Saturday afternoon.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies were dispatched to the home on Oregon Rd. west of Millville Rd. in Lapeer for the report of the child submerged in the pond.
Deputies say there was a family reunion with multiple people at the home. The 7-year-old and a 6-year-old who are cousins were a few hundred feet from the residence at a pond trying to catch frogs on the shoreline.
It's reported the 7-year-old entered the water to try and catch a frog and went under the water. The 6-year-old then went to the house and reported it to adults who called 911.
The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office dive team, canine team and search team responded, and law enforcement and EMS entered to water forming a chain to conduct a search along the shoreline.
The pond is around 10-15 feet, police say, and a Michigan State Police trooper found the child in the area of the last sighting.
The child was brought to shore unresponsive and transported to the hospital, but lifesaving efforts were not successful and the child was pronounced dead at 4 p.m.
