It’s one of the worst cases of neglect even seasoned animal rescue workers say they’ve ever seen.

A small dog was discovered on Wednesday, hair matted and tangled so much that it couldn’t even walk and barely open it’s mouth.

Detroit Dog Rescue quickly got the dog into the care of the Greenfield Animal Hospital, where the dog had to be under anesthetic for vets and techs to be able to start cleaning and caring for him.

The dog has been named Professor and he had a pound and a half of hair removed and he only weighs about 10 pounds.

Not only was he covered in dirty, matted hair, he also has a severe case of pneumonia, and if he was left in the elements any longer, he would have likely died.

"This is without a doubt the worst, one of the worst neglect cases I've seen, this dog is so matted, we've only seen a few other dogs, in this condition, it's just horrific,” said Kristina Rinaldi, the Executive Director of Detroit Dog Rescue.

Professor will be up for adoption eventually, but he’s going to need a lot of care until then. If you’d like to donate to his cause, you can head to detroitdogrescue.com.
