Advocates against domestic violence honored

Posted

Oakland County officials recognized community leaders fighting back against domestic violence and also honored victims who've died.

"It's cross-cultural. It doesn't matter race, religion, economics, education," says Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper.

"Domestic violence can devastate families, regions, communities," adds Eric Hawkins, Southfield police chief.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury for women in the U.S. ages 15 - 44. The number is more than rape, car accidents and muggings combined.

"Sometimes women, sometimes children, sometimes parent on child, sometimes child on parent. The more we talk about it the more people understand we won't take it anymore," says Cooper.

The message at the event: Domestic Violence is everyone's business.
