(WXYZ) — Southfield police say a stolen vehicle suspect was shot by police early Friday morning near a hotel on Northwestern.

According to police, an officer was investigating a stolen vehicle at Marvin's Garden Inn and saw a person walking toward the vehicle.

The officer activated his overhead lights and exited his patrol car, ordering the person to step away from the vehicle.

Police say the suspect ignored the command, got in the car and drove toward the officer.

The officer then fired several rounds at the vehicle, police say, but kept driving.

Police later received a call from Detroit police saying someone showed up at the hospital saying he had been shot by police. They identified that person as the suspect in the incident at the hotel.

The suspect had a non-life-threatening injury and was released from the hospital into police custody.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting.
