(WXYZ) — Amazon Logistics announced Wednesday it is opening a new Michigan delivery station in Sterling Heights to speed up deliveries for customers in metro Detroit.

The delivery stations enable Amazon Logistics to supplement capacity for the company's delivery capabilities.

Amazon expects it to create hundreds of full- and part-time jobs that pay a minimum of $15 per hour and offer a variety of benefits packages, according to Amazon.

Amazon Logistics announced it will open a new Michigan delivery station, located in Sterling Heights. The new station will power Amazon’s last-mile delivery capabilities to speed up deliveries for customers in Metro Detroit.

“Obviously Sterling Heights represents a significant customer base for Amazon, which certainly influenced their decision to select our city as the site for this delivery station,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “But the skilled workforce we enjoy here was also a major contributing factor. Our skilled labor in Southeast Michigan, particularly in Sterling Heights, is second to none. We are delighted Amazon has chosen Sterling Heights as home to one of the first delivery stations in the county.”

Amazon expects the site to open this year.
