DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Archdiocese of Detroit is taking major safety measures against the spread of coronavirus.

The Archdiocese sent emails to area priests and Catholic school leaders on Friday, laying out procedures to follow as COVID-19 continues to spread. Certain elements of service will also be modified.

Monsignore Charles Kosanke of the Ste. Anne Church in Detroit says it's to take precaution to prevent spreading.

An advisory from the Archdiocese of Detroit instructs area parishes to empty the holy water font and asks parishioners to stop shaking hands. It also recomments that parish stop, at least for now, offering wine during communiotn.

"It's not unusual when there's some type of spread of viruses that the church issues an advisory," Kosanke says.

The memo also instructs churchgoers not to attend mass if they're experiencing any symptoms of illness.
