A 21-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday morning after armed men broke into a home on Detroit's northwest side, police said.
It happened at about 4 a.m. on the 15000 block of Chatham, near Lahser Road and Fenkell Avenue.
Police said a woman inside the home hid in a closet and called 911. Police found the young man unresponsive in a hallway.
He was identified by multiple family members as Darius Finley.
“My brother was a good man,” said Byron Finley, the victim’s brother. “We all made mistakes in life, but that doesn’t give anybody the right to take his life.”
According to neighbors, a shotgun blast woke up half the neighborhood shortly before 3 a.m.
Steve Baldwin, who lives a few homes down, told 7 Action News that he didn’t think much of the sound noting that it’s not uncommon to hear gunshots.
“Look around,” said Baldwin. “Look at the area. Whatever the case may be seems like violence in the only answer (for young people).”
Baldwin added that he didn’t know the victim well, but that he never had any trouble with him.
Another neighbor, Marlin Franklin, said he’s spent the past few years trying to reach out to young people and make sure they are working toward a better future. He runs a non-profit in his son’s name after he was killed in a car accident by someone who stole a car.
Franklin said it was hard to see violence so close to the area he’s working to improve.
“Yet another tragedy with a man losing his life at that age,” said Franklin. “It’s very frustrating more than anything because my kids have to run to the bedroom and everyone hits the floor.”
Police are investigating the deadly shooting. Details of the investigating, including what the motive may have been or any suspects, have not been released at this time.
