Artists transforming abandoned block in Detroit into park, residences

Abandoned Detroit block transforms into art park

A non-profit art organization is turning an empty lot into a field of dreams for artists.

Carl Goines is the executive director of 555 Arts.

He said doesn't see a vacant lot in Detroit, he sees a place for artists to express themselves.

"This neighborhood seems like a great space that we can be part of the growth of," he said.

555 Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating an affordable live/work space for artists on Mitchell Street and East Warren.

Right now, they are renovating a home and using the lot across the street as the arts park. There are several pieces already up.

One artist is using remnants of nearby burned down homes.

Neighbors, like Anthony Stanford, say they like having something to look at.

"That's creative," he said. "This reminds me of the Heidelberg down the street."

Goines hopes to open the residence by Spring of next year, but it's hard when they depend on donations.

"We're on a shoestring budget, really grassroots effort with a lot of sweat-equity and volunteer time making it happen," he added.
