CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Police in Clinton Township are giving the all-clear after a stand-off with a man who allegedly had a gun.

According to police, they were able to talk the man down. He’s now in custody — details on who he is have not been made available.

A captain with Clinton Township police tells 7 Action News that they brought in a sergeant with negotiating experience early Thursday morning after it was relayed that a possible gunman was barricading himself inside an apartment near Harper and 16 mile.

Police quickly cleared the neighboring homes at Rivercrest Arms apartments. Shawn Holland, who lives nearby, said he spotted police rushing around with rifles.

“I see officers in front of my house running through my lawn with a rifle — one guy in camouflage,” recounted Holland.

The concern was that the man had barricaded himself into an apartment around a lot of people. School buses were notified to avoid the area so that children wouldn’t be in any potential line of fire.

“It’s an apartment complex, obviously they have paper-thin walls,” said Captain Bruce Wade. “If something were to happen it could go through a wall, hit adjoining units — you’ve got kids going to school. A lot of circumstances come into play.”

Wade said the man didn’t live at the apartment, but showed up to see someone he had a relationship with. It’s unclear, at this time, what caused the man to show up.

Police could not comment whether a gun had been found at the scene. The man turned himself in after a back-and-forth with police. He was in custody at last-check, but details of what crime he will be charged with are not known at this time.
