Nutrition is tough, but it doesn’t have to be impossible.
A new partnership between the Beaumont Health nutrition team and the Meijer in Royal Oak is making it easier to patients, and shoppers, to walk into their neighborhood grocery store with confidence.
Beginning earlier this month, and lasting through August, the two businesses have teamed up to allow for nutrition-specific health tours that promote healthy eating.
“This is where they come to make their decisions on what they’re going to be purchasing to cook for dinner,” said Natalie Watha, a member of the Beaumont nutrition team. “So, this is a great place to bring consumers to educate them on healthy options.”
Wth more than 45,000 food items to choose from inside the store, the series of tours is aimed at helping nutritious conscious shoppers navigate the stores for health choices. Tours begin at 10:30 a.m. on various dates that are already scheduled through Beaumont Health, however, they are free and open to the public. You do need to reach out to Beaumont Health to setup your spot, though.
“This is real life education,” said Watha. “It’s interactive, it’s informative and it’s the best way to educate our consumers.”
This Tuesday that education will be focused on heart health and the foods that are better for those who are at-risk of heart attacks, or perhaps have already had one. They’ve also done a tour on general wellness and in the near future they have tours focused on Diabetes, weight management, and gluten-free diets.
Each tour will have a focus on reading food labels properly, something that experts say is constantly in need of a “refresher course” if you’re not a health or food expert.
“(After the tour) they’ll have the confidence from the knowledge they brought home to make helpful, healthy decision,” said Watha.
If you’re interested in getting involved with a free nutrition tour with Beaumont Health nutritionists at the Meijer in Royal Oak you’re urged to reach out to Beaumont’s Nutrition Services at 248-898-3052.
The tours are free, but space is limited.
If you’re too late for Tuesday’s “Heart Health” tour, you can attend the next health tour on May 30, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.
