A presidential hopeful with Detroit roots is getting pressure to get out of the race after comments he made during a recent interview.
On Meet the Press on Sunday, Detroit native Ben Carson was asked about Muslims running for office.
"Do you believe that Islam is consistent with the constitution?” asked reporter Chuck Todd.
"No, I do not. I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” said Republican candidate hopeful Carson during the interview.
The words have sparked outrage with some.
The National Council on American Islamic Relations is calling for him to step out of the race.
The Executive Director of the Michigan CAIR office, Dawud Walid, was shocked when he heard the news.
"He's an African American. There are people in this country that didn't want our current president to be in office, simply because he's black and Dr. Carson is black, so to bring up an issue that someone should not be president based upon one part of their identity, I think is really horrible. I think it makes him unfit to be president of these United States of America,” said Walid.
7 Action News took to the streets to hear what average citizens thought of Carson’s remarks.
"I think that anyone that's interested in being president of the Unites States should care more about what they're going to do for people and the country than what someone else's religious beliefs,” said Tawania Witt of Dearborn.
"I feel like I'm American, sometimes I have the opportunity to do anything and then because of my religion and my background I get rejected ? That's not right,” said Dearborn resident, Mike Kadouh, who is Muslim.
During the interview Carson went on to say he might support a Muslim running for Congress but it would depend on the their policies.
