Eastern Michigan University says a man has been arrested, charged and arraigned in connection to the racist graffiti that popped up on the university's campus last year.

Eddie Curlin, 29, is charged with three counts of malicious destruction of property, four counts of identity theft and one count of using computers to commit a crime. Curlin is a former student at the school and attended from 2014 through early 2016.

It all started in September 2016 when a hate message was found spray-painted on an exterior wall at King Hall. Then, in October 2016, another racist message was found in men's bathroom stall inside Sherzer Hall.

The racist graffiti sparked a march across campus and a small silent protest by one student near the wall where the vandalism was found this morning by an employee.

The university said it has committed more than 1,000 hours into the investigation and interviewed more than 60 people. They had help from the FBI, Michigan State Police, Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, University of Michigan police, Ypsilanti police and more.
