(WXYZ) — A Bloomfield Hills surgeon who was convicted of performing unnecessary surgeries will serve his full 20-year sentence.
Former doctor Aria Sabit pleaded guilty to conspiracy and fraud for unwarranted spinal surgeries in California and Michigan.
Sabit argues the 20-year sentence was excessive.
He had a financial stake in Apex Medical Technologies and made a percentage when he used its spinal devices.
The court noted during his appeal that some patients are permanently disabled due to his scam.
His appeal was denied.
Sabit must now pay $1.9 million in restitution to the government, insurers and patients.
