(WXYZ) — Bloomfield Township police are investigating a bitcoin fraud case

Police say the 42-year-old victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be an employee of the Social Security Administration.

The victim was told her social security number was used in a crime in Texas. She was then transferred to another person claiming to be a U.S. Marshal, who instructed her to withdraw money from her bank account and deposit it into a bitcoin machine.

Police say the victim withdrew $10,000 and deposited into two separate bitcoin machines located inside Shell gas stations in Pontiac.

On Oct. 10, the victim told her son what happened and he immediately contacted police to file a report.

The Bloomfield Township Police is reminding the public that no government or law enforcement agency will ever instruct you to pay for fines or services using bitcoin. The case is currently under investigation.
