BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Bloomfield Township Police Department is stepping up to help children competing in the Special Olympics of Michigan.

The department is asking for people to donate their can and bottles that have added up amid the coronavirus pandemic.

So far, they have several semi trucks filled up with more than 250,000 bottles and cans donated. A lot of those were collected during the pandemic.

That adds up to about $25,000 donated to the Special Olympics of Michigan.

“We originally started with 1 semi truck. We knew we would need more. We were overwhelmed by community support and still need another one," Dispatcher Stacy Prachar said.

“It’s going to be a great benefit for them. We lost a lot of fundraisers because of COVID, so this will help out tremendously," Officer Kelly McGraw added.

The Special Olympics of Michigan have more bottle drives where you can donate. You can find more information here: https://www.somi.org
