DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police are searching for a murder suspect on the city's west side.

Investigators say, Anthony Smith, 62, was gunned down on June 6th around 12:30 p.m.

He was pronounced dead in a vacant lot near Fenkell and Lauder. It's also near the site of the former Cooley High School.

Police say, a witness told them at the scene, two vehicles pulled up at a high rate of speed.

The witnesses also told police, a woman handed the suspect shooter a gun and he shot and killed Smith.
Former boxer Julio Hernandez owns the World's Best Boxing Gym which is located a few blocks from the former school.

"That's tragic but it's daily life around here," Hernandez said.

He takes his young athletes to the track not far from where Smith's body was discovered by police.

"I'm trying to break the cycle with them," Hernandez said. "They're like my sons i will do anything for them."

He trains more than a dozen athletes from the city's west side. He said, boxing is more than a sport for the young men. He said, it's a lifesaver.

If you have any information about the crime you can call Detroit police or report it to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
