A United States Customs and Border Protection agent and two Michigan State Police troopers are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a suicidal person from the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle on Sunday night.

Around 8:30 p.m., the agent near downtown Detroit heard radio traffic from Detroit police about a possible suicidal subject on the bridge.

Once on scene, he observed the person against the guardrail that runs along the outside of the bridge. Two MSP troopers were attempting to talk the person away from the rail.

During the conversation, the troopers distracted the person and the Border Patrol agent quickly approached and tackled the person to the ground. A boat and crew from the Detroit station patrolling the river also provided coverage in the water.

“My hat goes off to Border Patrol Agent Humerez, who risked his life last night to save another life,”
said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “This is his second rescue of a suicidal subject from the
MacArthur Bridge and he should be commended.”

The person was safely taken to the hospital.
