A flock of Canada geese caused a pilot to veer off course, leading to a helicopter crash in Orchard Lake in early September, The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed Sunday.

According to the investigation, the helicopter left from the pilot's private heliport on Sept. 3 around 5 p.m. The pilot told investigators that he was maneuvering the helicopter to the right when a flock of Canada geese "came flying in to the front and right" of the helicopter.

The pilot quickly tried moving the aircraft to avoid the birds, and that was the last thing he remembered before impact.

There were no mechanical malfunctions or failures, and the pilot says the area where his privite heliport is located, there's a lake where Canada geese are known to congregate.
