The fire captain in charge of extinguishing a fire in Eastpointe that killed three children said rescuing them was an 'unobtainable goal.'
In a Facebook post, Jeff Scheuer said upon arrival, firefighters were met with thick, heavy smoke conditions.
They made two rescue attempts, but were stopped due to rapidly deteriorating conditions and excessive heat.
"This is a tragic loss of life that I am sure is felt throughout the community, and we are truly sorry," Scheuer said.
Three kids, aged 4, 8 and 9, died from the fire. Officials say they were home alone.
A GoFundMe has been made to support expenses.
