(WXYZ) — The Clinton Community Schools' Board of Education has voted unanimously to remove the 'Redskins' nickname.
According to a statement from the Board of Education, the group passed a resolution to "officially and respectfully retire the Clinton Redskin mascot and begin the process of adopting a new mascot during the 2020-2021 school year."
The superintendent will work to develop a process to identify a new mascot and rebrand the district, the Board of Education says.

The move comes after the Washington NFL franchise announced their plans to eliminate the controversial mascot on July 13.
"Clinton Community Schools is a district that believes in keeping true to our agreement and acting with integrity," according to the Board of Education.
In 2010, the Clinton community voted (93.6% in favor) to retain the Redskin name. At that time, while the name was retained, the District took action to remove imagery that depicted Native Americans. The Board of Education and Superintendent were in agreement that the Redskins mascot and name would be retained until the Washington Redskins changed or until the District was mandated to do so. Since that time, the Board has received numerous requests to change the mascot. The District's response to those requests have been consistent with the 2010 agreement.
