January has delivered a handful of cloudy and mild days putting us on pace for the 15th warmest January on record. This trend appears to end later this week with a pattern shift to a more Winter like set-up - so if you've been looking for cold and snow this is good news.
Another Warm Up
Before we get to the cold, we'll add to our collection of above average days with another warm up first. In fact, we have a shot at 40 degrees more than once this week despite the stubborn clouds.
With the graphic above, notice how the cold works in right after the 40 degree highs on Thursday. The rain arrives first, then eventually mixes with snow as temps drop on towards the weekend.
Looking & Feeling More Like Winter
When it comes to cold air outbreaks and snow, several teleconnections are reviewed for long range forecasting. Many of them are trending negative suggesting a colder pattern like the one above, which is the Eastern Pacific Oscillation (EPO). Sometimes it serves as a reliable sign for cold in the Midwest and the Great Lakes. Therefore, this could be just the start as temps appear to stay below average towards the end of January.
