(WXYZ) — Detroit has experienced the mildest January start since 2007, but winter is set to return. A chilly change arrives tonight dropping temperatures by 20 degrees, and unlike our previous rounds of cold weather this one will stick around for a bit.

Temps will struggle to get out of the 20s on Wednesday and will be in the teens by Thursday morning. Even though these numbers are fairly normal for this time of year, the Detroit area has been so mild lately that "normal" weather could be a shock to the system.

Check out the wind chills for Thursday morning below:

When you factor in the winds over the next couple of days, temps will feel like the single digits at times.

Will the Milder Winter Return?

The long-term pattern does bring back some milder temps by January standards. The Climate Prediction Center shows the Great Lakes Region is expected to be above average during the 3rd week of January. Therefore, the bitter cold is not expected to stick around for long.
