Wayne County now has the green light to move forward to complete the unfinished jail site on Gratiot.
A firm recently found the site to be "structurally sound and suitable" for restarting the build in 2017, according to the county.
Former Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano's administration stopped construction on the jail in June of 2013 after learning the project was drastically more expensive than the original $300 million planned facility.
“There’s been no shortage of speculation about this project, but we’re continuing to move forward with the Gratiot site,” Wayne County Executive Warren Evans stated in a news release. “Once we issue the RFP, we’re not looking back. It’ll be full speed ahead on the Gratiot site.”
