The Corktown community is rallying around the Katoi restaurant after a devastating fire.

Fire crews arrived at the restaurant off 17th & Michigan Ave around 6:15 on Friday morning.  Already, there was heavy fire inside.  It took crews about an hour and a half to get it put out.

The restaurant posted on social media, stating, ‘Katoi is bigger than any building, we will be back. To the future and beyond.”

There’s still a lot of questions surrounding how the restaurant will come back, but other Corktown businesses want to help in the meantime.

"Corktown is a family, and we want to make sure we do whatever we can whenever the next step becomes clear,” said Vince Keenan, the President of the Corktown Economics Development Corporation.

"The family of owners in Corktown is trying to find shifts that they can offer to Katoi employees in order to keep them whole while the question is being asked about what the next step is,” said Keenan.

Investigators tell 7 Action News it appears someone broke in to try and steal liquor and likely set the fire to cover up the break-in.
