(WXYZ) — The Wayne County Health Department is now offering limited doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at one-day sites throughout the county as people get more frustrated with waiting weeks to get an appointment.

One of the new sites opened today inside the Romulus Senior Center where 550 doses were administered to people 65 years and older. When the notice went out about this site last Thursday, people called in to register and would get a call back on Saturday with the time of their appointment.

Demand was hundreds greater than the 550 available spots.

Wayne County Chief Health Strategist Mouhanad Hammami, MD tells 7 Action News they have divided the county into 4 regions based on the population of age 65 and up and based on the 15 points in the CDC Social Vulnerability Index.

But many communities are still crying foul saying they should be included including a statement this afternoon from Van Buren Township which says in part, “The Wayne County Representatives were unable to report to Van Buren Twp. leadership when we could expect similar distribution, or where Van Buren Twp. stood based on the SVI criteria.”

Dr. Hammami says Wayne County also has to work with communities that have facilities like senior centers to be able to administer doses in the one-day events.

The state decides how many doses each county gets and Wayne County has been getting fewer doses by the thousands compared to the City of Detroit which has been administering 15,000 doses a week in the drive-through operation at the TCF Center.
