Ferndale offering new drive-thru voting option

FERNDALE (WXYZ) — Drive Thru Voting is the latest pandemic innovation. The city of Ferndale is offering 'Drive Thru Voting' this week.

"Our residents can come safely in their car into the city hall parking lot and request a ballot, they can also register to vote and get a ballot, then vote in their car if they so wish," says Ferndale Mayor Melanie Piana.

Or you can take your ballot home and mail it in or drop it off in the ballot box. You can also use the drive thru to spot your ballot and get a new one to vote again.

Ferndale's City Clerk is onsite during the drive-thru to issue ballots and process voter registration.

Trained election inspectors act as a go-between, taking IDs from the car to the clerk a few yards away and bringing back ballots. Drive thru voting is offered Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and this coming Tuesday and Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m. To provide a safe alternative for residents to vote absentee and register to vote, outside of normal business hours.

"More people voting protects our local democracy and that’s what this is about," Piana said.

They are piloting the drive-thru voting for the primaries and plan to expand upon the idea, offering the service for the November election as well.
