(WXYZ) — A spokesperson for Governor Whitmer's office confirms to 7 Action News that in-person dining will be allowed to resume on Feb. 1.
At this point, it's not clear what restrictions will be put into place once in-person dining resumes. Those may be revealed during an official announcement, which is expected to happen Wednesday. It is not yet clear when that will come.
In-person dining was shut down on Nov. 15 after Whitmer and MDHHS Director Robert Gordon issued an epidemic order for a 3-week pause in Michigan.
That 3-week pause was extended twice in December, which kept indoor dining closed.
Later in December, it was announced that bowling alleys, movie theatres, casinos would reopen, but restaurants would have to remain closed.
The Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association did file a lawsuit looking to open up restaurants for in-person dining, but a judge denied a request to stay the ban on indoor dining, and both sides eventually agreed to drop the case.
Several other states around Michigan have kept indoor dining open, with capacity restrictions and curfews. When dining was allowed in Michigan over the summer, it did have to be with 50% capacity and social distancing.
