LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling on Congress to provide adequate financial relief for states during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whitmer criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's plan, saying it fails to support states and communities.
She also criticized the plan for making education funding contingent on reopening schools.
"We've got to continue to follow the science," she said. "Can't know unless we know it's safe to do that."
"Stop the partisanship and get something done," the governor said.
Whitmer praised the HEROES plan by the U.S. House of Representatives, saying it would dramatically improve support.
"We need the Trump administration and federal representatives to get this done," she said. "Every one of us has to be part of making sure this country navigates the pandemic and comes out stronger."
The state reported 488 additional cases of COVID-19 and five additional deaths on Monday. That brings the total number of cases to 78,507 and the number of deaths to 6,154.
