(WXYZ) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer was joined by university athletic leaders in her Wednesday press conference to encourage Michiganders to wear masks.

Whitmer was joined by athletic leaders from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, including MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo, along with MSU women's basketball coach Suzy Merchant and UM women's basketball coach Kim Arico.

"The fight against COVID-19 is not just for Spartans, for Wolverines," Izzo said. "It's for everybody to come together."

"As we've all seen over these last few months, the common opponent is a deadly opponent."

Whitmer said it is "incumbent" for Michiganders to mask up for the sake of neighbors, loved ones, communities, heroes on the frontlines and businesses that want to remain open.

"By wearing masks now, we can put our state in a stronger position so our kids can return to school safely in the fall," she said.
