(WXYZ) — A Michigan state senator has tested positive for COVID-19.
Tom Barrett has been a vocal critic of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's handling of the pandemic.
In a statement, Barrett said he tested positive during a routine screening.
“Thankfully I do not have any significant symptoms at this time, and I will be self-isolating according to medical guidelines. I have done my best to make contact with those I have been around in the past couple weeks so that they may also seek medical advice.
“I look forward to resuming my normal work schedule as quickly as possible," the senator said.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, said Senate committees and session will be canceled for the week.
“In light of one of our colleagues recently testing positive for COVID-19, I encourage all caucus members to be tested. The Senate will cancel committees and session for this week, August 3-7, to allow adequate time for execution of protocols and receipt of results for individuals who choose to be tested. We all wish Senator Barrett a speedy recovery,” said Shirkey.
