Fire destroys Eastpointe family-owned business

A family-owned business in Eastpointe says they will stay open despite losing everything in a fire this morning.

The Eastpointe Deputy Fire Chief says they will spend the weekend investigating what caused the fire at Empire Tile and Marble Company.

Owner Roy Bianchini says they opened in 1959 and moved to the Eastpointe building in 1970. He and his brother have since taken over, carrying on the family legacy.

He says family pictures, awards and plaques are all lost.

The Eastpointe Fire Department was called to the shop on 9 Mile. and Gratiot around 4 a.m. after a report of an explosion. When crews arrived, there was heavy fire coming out of the garage.

No one was injured, but Bianchini says losing their books and records may set the business back.
