(WXYZ) — Investigators say a woman went into the Detroit River near Gibraltar but never came back out. As of Thursday, it's considered a recovery mission as she's been in the water too long to have survived.
Rescue crews called off last night's search after it got too late. Not only was it dark out, but crews told 7 Action News reporter Matthew Smith the rescue boats didn't have enough lighting.

The initial report of the missing woman came in Wednesday around 6 p.m. The call sent first-responders, including the Coast Guard, a dive team, Gibraltar Police and Fire and the Grosse Ile Fire Department, into the search.
Crews returned early Thursday morning with boats equipped with SONAR equipment in an attempt to find the woman. According to Captain Mike Bundt, of the Wyandotte Fire Department, it's believed that temperature played a role in where the woman's body would end up -- which is why they're searching an area near the Humbug Marina where witnesses saw her go under water.

"From what witnesses say the person went into the water on their own," said Captain Bundt, who declined to identify the woman. "Something happened that they went subsurface and didn’t resurface.”
Matthew Smith is working to get details about how the women went into the water in that area. We know someone reported the woman missing – and that person was talking with police late last night.
